A Taste of Esker 2014

Esker Lodge, celebrated nursing home life and participated in Nursing Homes Week 2014 with "A Taste of Esker"  from 16th -20th June 2014
Nursing Homes Week is a national celebration that took place in NHI Member Homes in communities across Ireland.

Esker Lodge organised a Taste of Esker to bring residents, their relatives and friends, staff and their families and the wider communities together.

A Taste of Esker featured -

A BBQ  - we had a wonderful day with fantastic weather and a huge turnout. Malachy, our head chef, reckons we went through over 150 burgers on the day! A big thank you to all the residents, their families and our wonderful staff for making it a really special day.

A Picnic in the Park - some of our residents went out for a picnic and actually had to sit in the shade because it was so hot. Luckily Naomi, our activity co-ordinator, had an awning on hand to keep the sun's strong rays at bay.

Baking Sessions/Demos - Back by popular demand was our pizza making demo. Everyone enjoyed the finished article, as they watched an old classic movie.

Smoothie Making - to counter act the pizzas, we had to do something healthy! Our residents loved the smoothies, using natural yoghurt, ice cream

Trips to Restaurants - some of our residents went out for tea to Smith's, an American-style diner, during the week and really enjoyed the atmosphere in the restaurant.

The celebrations brought together residents, their family and friends, staff and their family members and other regular visitors active in the Esker Lodge community

Vicky McDwyer, Managing Director of Esker Lodge said: “We see every day in our home friendship, warmth, camaraderie, humour, trust and love. It is important to recognise and celebrate the positivity of nursing home care. Nursing Homes Week provides such an opportunity.”

Valentines Celebrations

The Irish Guide Dogs were running a ‘Puppy Love’ campaign this Valentine’s Day to raise money for the association.

Our Residents thought it would be a good idea to support this cause.

We raffled a hamper for the occasion and had dogs in to visit the Residents during Valentine's week. We also had music by CiarĂ¡n and the residents enjoyed a sing along to some favourite songs followed by some tea time pink treats.
Thanks to everyone for a great day on Friday

positive aging week 27th September to 4th October 2013

A big thank you to Heather from the Cavan Branch of Birdwatch Ireland for coming in to talk to our residents about our feathered friends and wildlife in general as part of our Positive Aging Week celebrations.
The residents also enjoyed bowling thanks to National Active Retirement and Positive Aging 10 pin bowling week, organised in Astrobowl, Cavan. Everyone had a "ball", if you'll forgive the pun.
Our in-house poetry readings got underway yesterday and were a great success with residents and staff doing wondering contributions.
Thanks to everyone involved for a lovely few days...

An afternoon of music, celebrating Social Inclusion Week

As part of the Social Inclusion Week programme in Cavan (7-20th October 2013), Esker Lodge will host a social afternoon for residents with music by Grainne McPhillips and friends. The theme of this year's Social Inclusion Week is focusing on positive mental health. It is in this context that we encourage family and friends coming together to enjoy some "food for the soul".

National Ploughing Championships hot topic for Mens' Club

Esker Lodge is very excited to announce that we’ve started a Farming Men’s club every second Wednesday. All male residents are welcome. Anyone interested should talk to Rosie or Samantha. Last week in honour of the National Ploughing Championships we got the men together for discussions on robotic milking machines - "would ye or wouldn't ye?". Our resident dairy farming expert lead a reminiscence of olden days and forgotten ways of working. If anyone has any ideas of what the men could do in this club please let us know, your suggestions are welcome to help us get the club up and going. Keep an eye on the ‘Residents Communication Board’ in Killykeen for more information to come!
